Alumni Cocktail Party: A gathering held periodically to enable a select group of people who used to work together to consume vast quantities of alcohol and to talk about themselves all at the same time. - Kelly Hoey (with thanks to Fred Allen)
I’m all for parties, as my friends and former work colleagues know, but what bothers me is when parties are confused for alumni relations strategy.
If the party is your firm’s strategy, when the party is over, what do you do next…pat yourself on the back, nurse a hangover and select a venue for the next party? The what next, why are we and what next, are the questions you ask yourself before selecting the caterer and champagne.
If the party is for business, it’s part of the strategy, not the strategy.
